Warburton – Sad Songs for Happy People

This EP should come with a content warning. Brilliant cathartic indie sadness.

I’ve posted about these guys before, but this is their first official release. It’s very beautiful, indie/folk music from Toronto. More importantly, it’s hard to listen to without being concerned for the songwriter(s?). These songs are difficult.

Almost every song references two things: someone named Danny, and clinical depression. There’s mention of suicide and breakups. There’s also beautiful, subtle harmonies and striking turns of phrase in the lyrics.

I tried to find live footage to share (their hit on Spill magazine makes it sound like they’re fantastic live), but came up empty. Their next show is April 26 in Toronto, with LODEF and others.
