The first third or so felt like a bit of a slog – the author is dealing with really complicated science, and it’s not easy to simplify. He also gets bogged down in details that time will erase – deep in the weeds on disagreements and lawsuits, that could have been 25 pages shorter.

However – it’s all worth it. This book is so of-the-moment it’s wild. The author brings life to all of the players, and the grind at the beginning brings a much richer understanding of the accomplishments and competition in the second half of the book.

I read this not long after The Innovators, and in many ways it feels like a sequel to it. The books share themes, people and science, in surprising ways.
