I heard Soot Sprite‘s “I Went Swimming” on the excellent BuffaBLOG when it came out in June, and loved it immediately. The vocal is so unique and distinct, the melody is memorable, the song is irresistible:

The other A-side to the single was released today, it’s called “Home Among Your Bones” and it’s pretty different than the first single. It’s bright, warm, catchy, perfect indie-pop:

Turns out there’s a lot to dig into from this band. I love it when this happens. They’ve been putting out music since 2018 when they released debut EP Comfort in Concrete – a well-produced, straightforward shoegaze sound.

Over the next two EPs, the band developed a more emo or indie-pop sound. The clearer vocal on 2019’s Sharp Tongue allows the songwriting to shine on tracks like “Dust” and “Cool Cadaver”. Here’s a gorgeous live performance of that one with a killer crescendo:

With 2021’s Poltergeists they broadened their sound even more. The fuzzy guitars are still there, and the production and songwriting are stronger than ever. “Night Thirst” could fit in on any Conor Oberst album:

The two new tracks hit a little different after that deep dive — the production on the new tracks is richer, highlighting Elise Cook’s vocal more than ever, which brings character and distinction to the new songs. The album art (also by Cook) leads me to think there’s a full-length coming, and I can’t wait to hear more.
