Lizzie Esau sounds like a performer that has been on stage live a lot. There’s a level of polish to her recordings that sounds accomplished and loose, rather than concocted in a studio.

She’s got two EPs out and seems to be setting up to break out, with a couple new singles in 2024 and some good press from BBC Introducing and Dork magazine.

It seems like their signature track is the latest release. In interviews she talks about this being a staple of the live set for years:

Impossible and Strange was the track that hooked me, though I couldn’t tell you where I heard it first:

Going back through her catalogue the sound and style has developed a lot between the first releases and now. Her first two EPs are solid 90’s alt-radio sounds (see Bleak Sublime and What If I Just Kept Driving). A favourite from her earlier stuff is The Enemy. Here’s a ripping live version that confirms my theory about being a strong live act:

Bonus: this instagram video has her mashing up her song with songs by The Cranberries and Blondshell.
