Yesterday Indie Underrated recommended a song by Kid Tigrrr called “Skin”. It was released back in March, and it’s a lovely bit of indie pop that I’ve come back to several times since I first heard it. The lyrics of the chorus (“I wanna wear my skin/like I did/before I became a stranger in it”) are haunting and attention-grabbing. Here it is:
Kid Tigrrr is Jenna Fournier, from Cleveland. She’s released 5 singles on streaming services so far, with a strong indie bedroom pop/shoegaze sound similar to blog fave TTSSFU.
For me the real treat here was the video for “Dinosaur”. With all the 90’s nostalgia in music right now, Fournier found an old family movie (on VHS!) and used it to make the video for the song. My oldest friend found videos like this that we made as kids and the idea of watching them sounds both incredible and incredibly embarrasing. I love this video so much:
She’s gathering steam too – Kid Tigrrr was named by Billy Corgan as “On His Radar” last month in The Guardian. She also sings backup on the new Pumpkins record. That’s a pretty high-profile fan club member. I wonder if she’ll be opening for them when they tour the album?
She’s also the guitarist and lead singer of a band called Niights, who have a stronger indie rock sound to them. Here’s one of their videos, which is animated by someone named Jenna Fournier. Did I mention she’s also a talented visual artist?:
Niights’ last album came out in 2019, but the band’s Instagram page seems to show that they’re playing again and hints at new music. With all these projects happening at once, she may have a very busy fall.
