This new single from Honeyglaze is a beast:
It lands somewhere between Pursuit and R&B — clear-eyed fury over a spiky, of-the-moment guitar backing. Starts fairly simple and builds to an absolute fever. I hadn’t heard of them before so I wanted to learn more — their first album almost sounds like a different band at first.
Their debut self-titled record is melodic and low-key. The sound is almost radio friendly, but the lyrics are still strongly personal, frequently strongly feminist and direct, sometimes funny. As with This Could be Texas (I know this was released first, but not to my ears), the album is musically excellent, but the songwriting is what sticks.
Burglar is a standout:
There are several tracks with lyrical or musical twists that made me stop what I was doing and go back and listen again. The debut album is one of those ‘rewards multiple listens’ albums – only when I was finished my first full listen did I feel like I had a handle on the band’s style and vibe.
That is to say, the 2022 version of the band. With this single they also announced they’ve signed to a new record label. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a departure the new album is from their debut. The new single is a winner, I’m glad to have found this band.
