Debdepan only has four songs available online, but their moody indie sound and their live performance are compelling and strong

No idea where I first heard “Darkest Hour” from Debdepan. I love it though:

Debdepan is two lifelong friends, Chelsea Tolhurst and Grace Bontoft, from somewhere called Ramsgate in England. On their Bandcamp they list their influences as Warpaint, Marika Hackman, The Cure, PJ Harvey and The Big Moon, and you can absolutely hear it in the music (Confession, I just heard The Big Moon because of this post. They’re excellent and you should check them out.)

Here’s their only other music video, for “The Goat”, the lead song on the 2023 3-track single Omen. The song is moody and melancholic, but the video is a charming bit of DIY, featuring a villainous Hulk Hogan cosplayer sabotaging their recipes and dreaming about a horse(?).

There’s also this recording of a live performance at The Grace in London from a YouTuber named Eugey Baby that posts a lot of great up-and-coming acts:

They sound great for a band without a full-length out or a headline tour. That’s not to say they’re new to the live show: they’ve opened for blog fave Snapped Ankles as well as cumgirl8, Dutch Mustard, and a bunch more.

Might as well be thorough — here’s the fourth and final song they’ve released, titled “Light Out”. It’s a more subdued, mellow song that brings to mind early Interpol.

This post mentions that they recorded 7 songs in April, and the momentum that’s building around them suggest that there’s an EP on the way.
