I don’t know anything about this. I heard shockingly interesting music coming from my teenager’s room on the weekend, and this is what it was. I promptly stole my kid’s LP and kept it playing all weekend.
The music is eclectic jazz, I guess? It’s so far out of my usual tastes, I lack the vocabluary to write with any authority. But it’s fantastic. I guess the anime is 25 years old, and this is a bunch of music from the series. There are some tracks that feel like video game music (“The Egg and I”), like jazz from 80 years ago (“Woodcock”), and some that sound like Japanese radio rock (“The Real Folk Blues”).
I don’t know if it’s ‘good’ by any objective jazz standard, but holy cow it’s a great soundtrack for a weekend.
Doesn’t seem to be available on streaming officially, but you can find playlists pretty easily. The LP is a beautiful baby blue marble, and comes with liner notes that include an interview with the composer Yoko Kanno.
