I hadn’t heard Burr Oak until yesterday morning, when a website called For The Rabbits posted their new music video for the single “No Time to Dream”. They’re an indie band from Chicago, and this single is catchy indie rock. It’s an urgent, anxious song and even though it’s only two and a half minutes long, it does the work of a short story. The lyrics describe a new mother with post-partum depression, and the video is a lovely hand-drawn animation by Lemon Pulp Studios that made me tear up. Check it out:
It’s their second single of 2024, following “Rainclouds”. That one is a little more low-key indie rock, and it has a short film for a music video, that feels straight out of the 90s in the best way:
…both of them will be on the upcoming EP titled Annabelle, being released September 20.
Turns out this is the first music they’ve released in some time. Burr Oak’s debut album Late Bloomer came out in 2021. It’s a gorgeous record, though more on the mellow side than the new tracks. When it was released, the band recorded an Audiotree session, which sounds great, but looks weird — this was during a phase of heightened COVID precautions. It’s a great set, and the band seems adorably awkward when they’re not performing:
If you’re in Chicago, they’re playing a free show next weekend.
