Loma – Pink Sky

The two singles from Loma’s upcoming album are cinematic and cathartic. I love them.

This is the second song from Loma’s upcoming album How Will I Live Without a Body? being released next month. It’s soft and hypnotic with a slight trip-hop feel. There are some surprising (but perfect) instrumentation choices in the second half of the song that give it a real cinematic, dramatic feel. The video is a handmade beauty, animated and directed by Sabrina Nichols who I just learned about, but has quite the CV. Check it out:

The first single is even more cinematic and immersive. How It Starts grows from a simple piano and kick drum loop to an orchestral finish. The lyrics evoke rebirth and catharsis, and according to the Subpop page that’s due in part to the band being kept apart for the pandemic years. It was recorded in part in a 12th century chapel (!), a tiny coffin-maker’s workshop (!!) and an actual coffin as a vocal booth (!!!).

I hadn’t heard this band until this week, but I’m looking forward to hearing the full album. I dug into their catalogue, and it sounds like the new music is a bit of a step forward from the sound of their prior two albums. Perhaps it’s the super intimate recording setting, or the forced limitations they put on their recording setup. At any rate, it’s a gorgeous sound that I hope is woven through the whole record. I love it.
