Listen – November 2023

Til Shiloh

This album was a constant presence for me when it was new. A few weeks ago I put it on again and it stands up pretty well. Then right on cue, Pitchfork gives it the Sunday treatment:

Applying the intricate rhythmic improvisations of the deejay’s art to such emotionally raw subject matter, Buju arrived at a vocal form with the immediacy of personal testimony, pouring forth in a stream of consciousness that could also, paradoxically, hypnotize with the chanting quality of a prayer.

Panic Shack

Not sure how I came upon this band, but they’re funny and fun – think The Chats, but gender-flipped.

DJ Krush – Meiso (feat. The Roots) REMIX by DJ Shadow

It’s not new, but it’s an all-time banger. Haven’t heard it for probably 10 years, but it found its way back into rotation last week.

Denzel Curry covering Bulls On Parade

My recent trip down the Triple J rabbit hole led me to this Denzel Curry cover of Bulls on Parade. Arguably better than the original.

Blondshell

Took me a long time to come around on this album, but now it’s on all the time. It’s also reminded me how great the first two Liz Phair albums are. They’re on tour together! And coming nowhere near me!

Bully

This whole album is terrific. It’s been my default driving music for the last few weeks.

Petty Victories – Tremble

This is a song that deserved better. It came out in 2013 and I remember getting the mp3 from a Toronto indie music blog(? Maybe a record label sampler), then nothing really followed. It’s too bad, the song is fantastic.
