This book is like nothing else I’ve ever read. A family drama that spans 3 generations, but also the family is a bunch of literal monsters.

Enriquez’s writing (and Megan McDowell’s translation) is so straightforward and matter-of-fact that it amplifies the dread and horror. It’s horrifying but I couldn’t put it down.

It’s a slow read — every sentence is important, and the horrors sneak up on you out of nowhere.

The ending is excellent, though somehow feels a little rushed (after 550 pages!).

It’s absolutely worth reading and savoring. Slow-burning nightmare fuel.
