Duvet – Girlcow

Angry, groovy, bass-forward danceable punk rock. And sometimes cowbell.

I thought I was listening to a raucous new track from Drahla when this came on:

Nope. Meet Duvet. The second half of that song is more along the lines of what to expect from them. Angry, groovy danceable punk rock, bass-forward with lots of spoken/shouted lyrics. And cowbell, sometimes.

They’ve only released 5 tracks, though the first two (“Running Around in Circles” and “Clown Clown Clown”) seem like the band was still finding their footing. The three from last year (The two above, plus Rodeo, below) have that killer dark angular energy that seems to be the big thing right now (on this blog it is, that’s for sure).

They played a few other songs at a December show for So Young Magazine (there’s a pretty good piece about the band on the So Young website too). Once the audio quality sorts itself out, they sound pretty good live, though it sounds like the mix was a bit off. Singer Grace Walkdon’s howl is impressive once she warms up around 7:45:

Nice recovery by the guitarist at the end of the second-last song, not a moment too soon. There’s a lot more fury to their live show than their Bandcamp tracks. The unreleased tracks in that live set sound like they’ll fit nicely along Girlcow and Rodeo on the (presumably forthcoming) EP. Can’t wait to hear more.

BONUS: Here’s a more energetic performance in front of a crowd that’s really into it (you can see the crowd dancing at around 7:15). The band clearly reflects the energy from the crowd. Love it.
