Julian Barnes is a new favourite author. I hadn’t read anything by him until The Sense of an Ending a couple months ago, and I haven’t been able to get that book out of my head since.
This one might even be better. It’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever read. Even so, I was absolutely glued to it — I read it in basically one sitting, then immediately considered starting again. It feels so real, and the writing is so beautiful. The narrative perspective shifts twice — both times I found it a crushing surprise.
Absolutely loved this book. It’s going to haunt me for a long, long time.
