Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem

Something about this just didn’t work for me.

Filed under:

This sounds like something that’s right up my alley – a noir detective story that people compare to Raymond Chandler, told from the point of view of someone with Tourette’s Syndrome. It was made into a (fairly well reviewed) movie full of great actors.

But I got about 2/3 of the way through before I threw in the towel. I don’t really know why, could just be that it found me at the wrong time, but I just could not engage with the story. The main character was interesting enough, and from what I’ve read the Tourette’s thing was executed well and well-received by the groups that support IRL sufferers, but the story itself just didn’t have anything for me to grab onto.

Bummer.
