First off, the set SPRINTS recorded at KEXP is finally out:
The Friday post continues to evolve — this week I’m adding new releases from artists I’ve written about recently.
Tonight I’m seeing Good Kid (my own kid is the biggest fan). Still tickets available, they put on a great show. They’re talented guys, and full of goofy energy. I bought tickets to see Fxrrvst with Dollar Signs next week at Collective Arts, and Hinds at Lee’s Palace in October (presale code ‘vivahinds’). Also got tickets to the Fontaines D.C. show in October too, but mostly to because Been Stellar is opening.
Wavelength Music Festival is having the big free show on June 8, with Mother Tongues and Lael Neale (watch this space) and a bunch of other artists I’m going to learn about next week.
Books? Got those too. The Trees by Percival Everett was the best thing I’ve read in a long time. He also wrote the book that the fantastic American Fiction is based on. He’s written more than 20 novels and I only started reading him last month. Love it when that happens.
Thank you for checking this out! I hope you find something you like here, and if you’re so inclined for any reason, get in tough.
Want this in your inbox? OK:
New releases from old faves
New feature! This is new music from bands I’ve written about recently, but it’s too soon to warrant a whole new post. I’m working on the approach here, so bear with me.
All of these artists are in the playlists: Apple Music, Spotify
New Albums
- Ellis released her latest LP No Place that Feels Like on April 26 and it’s lovely and sad
- Baula‘s record heavy heart, no tears came out on the same day – shoegazey, melancholy indie rock with “Tarantino guitars” (their words)
- The Empty Page released Imploding, which I’ve been looking forward to for a month
Singles and other stuff
- Hinds released a new single Boom Boom Back (featuring Beck!?) and announced a tour
- The Band Genie released the new single Another Chance – groovy indie rock perfect for patio season
- Math Club released Until It Breaks, midtempo, melodic indie rock with a real Counting Crows vibe. THEN last night he released another one: The House, Settling
- Sham Family released Community Service – driving indie rock that reminds me of Been Stellar
- Moondoggy‘s latest single Made it Out is throwback radio indie rock that feels like you’ve heard it before
New music discoveries
If you want to hear a couple tracks from each of these, I’ve made you a mixtape in Apple Music and Spotify.
Check ’em out and if you have anything to say, please do.
-
No Sunshine Collective – Nothing Personal
This Toronto punk rock trio reminds me of when I first became a fan of tiny-club shows.
-
Dollar Signs – Legend Tripping
Earnest, funny, high-energy indie rock. Seeing them play next week
-
Camille Léon – Panic & Apathy
This song has been on my car playlist for months, and it gets played loud every single time.
-
TTSSFU – Me, Jed and Andy
Tasmin Stevens makes DIY dreamy indie rock with some dark, trauma-fuelled lyrics
-
ELDR – Deer Skin
I started out thinking this was a bit of Bjork-flavoured-trip-hop. I was wrong in the best way.
-
Duvet – Girlcow
Angry, groovy, bass-forward danceable punk rock. And sometimes cowbell.
Till next week, team. Be good. Don’t be afraid to say hello.

“When someone yells out a song, I know it’s coming from a very sweet place, but I literally can’t play it.”
Paste Magazine interviews Conor Oberst about his NY/LA residency shows.

The Quiet Girl (directed by Colm Bairéad)
I didn’t know this adaptation of Claire Keegan’s Foster existed. But it does and it’s great
