“…if you want your album to be considered great, it helps if it is also popular when it’s released”

The geniuses at The Pudding have dropped another banger. Titled “WHAT MAKES AN ALBUM THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME?”, it explores the data behind the changing ‘best albums’ lists from Rolling Stone Magazine over the years.

It’s got a wild amount of interactivity. The tiniest images of album covers can be clicked on — the faces of the critics and voters all have names attached.

The upshot seems to be that (1) a diverse voter pool produces more diverse results, and (2) that time seems to create consensus. 25 years ago you could have had a debate about whether Ten or Nevermind was the more influential record. That’s pretty settled now (though Ten still rips).

Check it out — it’s beautifully designed and built. Chris Dalla Riva‘s Substack is already required reading.
