Alex does a lot of different things. He’s a singer and songwriter, a PR guy for independent artists, and most recently, a top-tier podcaster.
His new podcast Your Worst Song is now 4 episodes in, and it has become appointment listening for me on Mondays. Here’s the pitch:
Guests come on, introduce themselves (artist / band), chat a bit about the Toronto Music Scene, discuss their best and worst gigs, and then after an “ad break” we get to the meat of the podcast and discuss their WORST song. We play the song in full at the end of the episode.
It’s great stuff. Alex is a fantastic interviewer and draws out his guests well. His enthusiasm for the material is audible and infectious. The ad breaks are ridiculous. Every episode has made me laugh out loud more than once.
The first episode was with Nathan from blog fave Warburton, and the episodes since have put me on to new artists that I weren’t familiar with – including today’s with Kicksie.

His music is excellent too. It’s mostly acoustic, folky stuff. He’s on a run of new singles right now, having released 5 new tracks since April. The latest is called Entertainers Bring May Flowers (+1 for the classic Liz Phair reference). I really like the layering in here – the vocals, the saxophone, it all has a bit of a controlled chaos vibe to it:
The whole run of releases has been unique and interesting. May release Down, Boy features Julie Title on vocals, and more of the controlled chaos:
He’s got a pretty big catalogue on Bandcamp. One of his EPs that I’ve come back to a lot is Common Fantasies from 2022. It’s more of a full-on alt-rock collection, and he really leans into the vocal on some of the tracks. Soften is a favourite:
He has a couple shows coming up this week (Thursday and Saturday, check is instagram for more).
