It’s tricky to hear the three songs on November’s collaborative release still life and puzzle out where Total Wife stops and Baby Wave starts, especially since they were both new to me. Turns out I’m a Total Wife guy. “leftovers” (above) rips.
Total Wife is the duo of Luna Kupper and Ash Richter from Nashville, and they’ve been pushing various boundaries with their music since 2018 – from the off-kilter indie-eclectic sound of 2021’s expansive debut album To Make Sound, they’ve been moving toward a more sample-driven sound which comes to a head on their latest EP 0. Of the four tracks, three of them are proper songs, and those are weird-ass bangers.
You can’t categorize this without hyphens. It’s got jungle elements, but grunge but shoegaze but dreampop but industrial but but butbutbut. Whatever. It’s good.
They’re prolific as hell, with four full length (and very different) albums out in the last 3 years, so I imagine there’s a bunch more on the way in short order.
