Cosplaying a jurist
for the fanciest music prize in Canada
The Polaris Prize
The Polaris Music Prize is $50,000 awarded to the best Canadian album of the year. Early on in 2023, they announced the longlist, and I decided to pretend to be a jurist for the 2024 prize to see what it was like. I’m a pretty big music snob, but tried to put that aside and keep a fully open mind. I got a lot more than I bargained for. Check out the posts below to see how things went down.
Part One
The Longlist, I listened to some of all of the records to whittle it down in a totally nonscientific and vibes-based way.
Part Two
The Cull, I tried to form a shortlist, which was a much harder task than I expected
A fun digression, in which I make my own list of records that I would have submitted for consideration
Part Three
The shortlist, for which I managed to whittle my list down to ten. Five of mine were also on the jury’s shortlist.
Part Four
The winner, and some drama, where I announce my winner after considering a bunch of other stuff. My winner didn’t match the Jury’s winner.
