Missing from the Village by Justin Ling

The true story of Bruce McArthur, a serial killer who found his victims in Toronto’s Gay Village.

I have a whole bunch of connections to this story. I lived in the neighbourhood while this was going on, and sat next to McArthur at brunch a couple times at O’Grady’s, I’m loosely related to one of the key figures in the book, I know the author a bit from online communities.

And wow, this is good. Super-engaging and deliberately not part of the ‘true-crime’ genre. More of criticism of how so many systems fail marginalized people.

If you’re wondering why uniformed Toronto Police haven’t been welcomed in the Pride parade in recent years, this will fill in those blanks.

It’s sad and shocking but not surprising. Can’t recommend this highly enough.
