I heard POM for the first time last week, and I added their latest single “a craving” to the Friday playlist (you should follow the Friday playlist). The song is playful and extremely catchy. The vocal has tons of character, the guitar riff is super catchy, and the chorus is propulsive and fun. It’s perfect power-pop, one of my favourite recent finds:
The band’s prior release, June’s “a great escape” was just as good. It’s starts off with a strong Strokes sound to it and gets poppier from there. The vocal from Liza van As has such a distinct sound:
POM is a five-piece from Amsterdam, and they’ve been releasing music since 2019. With the release of “a craving” they also announced an EP titled AAAAH!, for release March 7 of 2025.
For Record Store Day this year they re-released two of their earliest singles on vinyl. The band’s first-ever single, “Down The Rabbit Hole” sounds like Jack White getting goofy with Grace Slick, and “Earth Sick” is another high-energy melodic earworm with lyrics that made me laugh out loud:
Their debut album came out about a year ago. We Were Girls Together was released last November, and if the songs above appeal, so will the full record. The songs just radiate charisma and charm. Van As has a playful delivery, and even when she’s cursing, the songs are fun. Here’s “Sorry”, from We Were Girls Together:
They’ve got more singles and an EP called Lately that collects the early singles. Here’s a killer live performance of most of the songs on that EP. The band looks like they would put on a super fun live show. The whole thing is worth hearing, but if you only have time for one, skip to the performance of “Eat Me, I’m Sad” at about 12:40:
I imagine there’s going to be a few more singles in the lead up to the EP in March. I also imagind you’ll see them all on the Friday playlist (you really should subscribe).
