Let this run for one single minute and try to turn it off. Bet you can’t:
Lou Smith for President, or whatever he wants. Thanks to him I’m a huge fan of Sofia and the Antoinettes. This happened before with Punchbag and Luvcat: a performance video from an artist that’s new to me, that’s enough to make me a fan, despite there being almost no commercial release.
Sofia and the Antoinettes has two songs out (the second just came out today), but they’re moody, cinematic and gorgeous. That five-song set from The George Tavern is outstanding — well-mixed and well-recorded, and above all well-performed. Sofia’s voice is full of character, and she leaves it all on the stage — I bet she had a sore throat the next day. “Hi My Love” is the standout for me, but the songs are all great. At one point she says that the band has only been practicing for ‘like a week’, which is impressive as well.
The last song in the set, “Buried (In This Room)” was the debut single:
And here’s the release from today, called “Matthew”. Another dramatic, climactic and cinematic single. I can’t get enough of her voice:
There isn’t a whole lot more to say at this point, as there hasn’t been a lot of coverage of the band. I imagine that’ll change soon though: the new single looks like it’s taking off for them, and I can’t wait to hear more.
