“Psychic” by My Cosmic Girl was background music while I was doing another task until the strings kicked in at 0:54. The song has a natural ebb and flow to it that’s just gorgeous. The vocal harmonies and instrumentals combine in a texture that gave me goosebumps:
That’s the third single from My Cosmic Girl, a jazz-influenced pop group from Wellington, NZ. I’ve had it on repeat all morning. Here’s their first single “Frenchie”. It’s irresistible stuff, singer Ella Doty’s range is impressive, and the instrumental is gorgeous:
That’s the one that convinced me to find out more about them. Here’s a pretty good little behind-the-scenes on the recording of that song — pianist Elvis Arthur is a helluva talent as well.
The other single from earlier this year, “Help It”, is closer to an indie rock sound than the others. This one was a bit of a grower, but after a few listens, I’m all in:
The band’s versatility is pretty appealing. They’ve got an EP on the way, according to their Bandcamp. Their YouTube channel has a couple of pretty good live recordings that might be a sneak peek at what’s to come.
