The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping

What if Residential Schools but capitalism?

This is an excellent documentary about the abuse and manipulation of the teenaged ‘students’ and their families by the people behind the Ivy Ridge boarding school in the 2000’s.

It’s horrifying stuff to be sure, and filmmaker Katherine Kugler has done a brave and bold thing in making it. I hope that Lichfield and his band of criminals get what they deserve, though I suspect the Deming principle applies here.

What jumped out at me though is the similarities between the Ivy Ridge and other WWASP schools and the Canadian Residential School system that ran until the 1990s. There are lots of resources on this — I can recommend We Were Children (free on CBC Gem if you’re in Canada, or cheap if you’re not).
