Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm by Dan Charnas

This is great. I learned a bunch of interesting music theory, and it was a fascinating look at hip hop starting in the mid 90s.

The author didn’t know the artist — and it kind of felt like very few people that he spoke to knew him well either. Dilla didn’t feel fully formed in this, and it’s clear he was mercurial and complicated.

The book excels when discussing the music — the reaction Dilla’s work triggered from other legendary musicians — Questlove, Common, D’Angelo, Q-Tip, and countless more.

Loved this.
